Prior to the 1300s, there was no bridge crossing the River Aire. Instead, a ferry operated.
A ferry house stood on the grounds of the Hotel Indigo Leeds, followed by a coaching inn with stables named the ‘Commercial Inn’. Before the railway between Leeds, Manchester and York was built, the coach service was the main form of transport.
The building you see today was built on part of the Commercial Inn and was designed by Thomas Ambler. Previously called The Golden Lion Hotel, Hotel Indigo Leeds has been a hotel for over 100 years.
Following a significant refurbishment, the Golden Lion Hotel was renamed the Cosmopolitan Hotel.
